Multiple Security Levels

Postby DDroog » Wed Apr 27, 2016 3:32 pm

When will eHive have multiple security levels available?
It was promised on this site in 2010.
Our organisation uses many volunteers to input and edit our records on eHive, and the present one user access is not appropriate.

We're still planning to support this.

Over the last year we have been working on a completely new interface for eHive. This modernises the underlying technology in which eHive is built. Without this step it has been difficult to implement more complex new features.

The new version of eHive will launch by May 16th. The most significant change is the support for mobile and tablet access. This has become particularly important for website visitors, as 20% of the public visitors now use a mobile device.

Once the new version has been launched we will be planning future development. It's likely that support for multiple logins with be given higher priority as many sites have expressed interest in this. It's also likely that there will be a charge per login once this is available within the system.

We'll keep you posted once the new site has launched in May.

What is the progress in this area.
Also iis it possible to be able to get a log of when & how many users are using your system?

We're currently completing planned changes to how images are uploaded and stored on the system. It has been essential to prioritise this work over other potential enhancements as we projected the volume of images was going to grow beyond what the current architecture could cope with.

Adding in multiple logins with different security levels is the next feature on our roadmap ( http://info.ehive.com/roadmap/ ), so we'll be starting on this next. We have been working through the design so that we're ready to do the development as soon as the imaging changes are complete. However, the development work is significant and is likely to take 6-12 months. We're looking at doing an incremental rollout, with very basic features first and then extending this with multiple smaller upgrades. A possible breakdown is:

- add additional logins, all with the same security rights
- log user sessions and track which records have been changed
- assign users to broad security levels
- control security access at a more precise feature level
- support users logging into more than one account

Thank you for your interest in these changes. It is a priority for us - we just need to balance the work with changes to keep the system up and running with the large number of users. There are now 750,000 records in the system and over six million images files.
